The last big tainted fruits and vegetables cases that I can remember is the spinach ordeal that happened about a year and a half ago. I do believe that the spinach was tainted with salmonella also. I remember all stores and restaurants in my local area completely took all raw spinach off of the shelves and did not sell it for that period of time. It really sucked not to be able to eat a fresh spinach salad without worrying about being poisoned. However, it would have been awful to be poisoned from the salmonella so I am glad for the extra cautiousness.
Well, if you are afraid of getting salmonella from the tainted tomatoes, than you should be aware of what States are being affected by this outbreak. From what I heard, there are a few counties in Florida that was affected by the Salmonella Saintpaul in tomatoes outbreak.
According to CNN reports, the safe States that should not be affected by the Salmonella Saintpaul in tomatoes are Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
My state happens to be listed in the safe list, which I am very thankful for that. CNN has also reported that the latest count of illnesses in connection with the salmonella tainted tomatoes has increased to 228 cases.
If you do not know what salmonella is…it is a bacteria that causes illness that is related to the intestinal tract. The symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. You can get salmonella poisoning by eating food that is tainted by this bacteria.
So, how worried are you about the tomato salmonella? Are you in the areas of the United States where these tainted tomatoes are possibly being sold in local grocery stores?
